‘Going Online’ workshop to help high school journalism teachers

Going Online, a one-day workshop for high school journalism teachers who want to start a news web site or take their print publications online, will be held Monday, December 6, 2010, at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

The workshop will provide high school journalism teachers with the following:

• Basic instruction and material on how to teach web journalism;
• A content management system, server space and maintenance for their news web sites – all at no cost;
• Information about the Interscholastic Online News Network (ISONN), an association of high school web sites that will connect your school’s site to many others around the nation.

The workshop is sponsored by the UT School of Journalism and Electronic Media and the Intercollegiate Online News Network (ICONN).

Cost of the workshop is $35 per teacher.

Day 2 workshop rescheduled for Monday, Oct. 25

The Going Online Day 2 workshop for Interscholastic Online News Network (ISONN) §§ will be held on Monday, Oct. 25, at the University of Tennessee.

The workshop is designed to assist high school journalism teachers take their print publication online or to start news web sites for their journalism students.

The workshop will be held in the Scripps Convergence Lab of the College of Communication and Information at UT Knoxville. The lab is located in 402 Communications Building. It will begin at 9 a.m. and last until about 3 p.m. Lunch and parking will be provided.

This workshop is a follow-up to the Going Online workshops that occurred at UT in April and June, and participants at those workshops are encouraged to return, according to Jim Stovall, journalism professor at UT and executive director of the Interscholastic Online News Network.

Those who did not attend the first workshop but are interested in going online with their publications are also welcome, Stovall said.

“Our main goal is to help high school teachers provide an opportunity for their students to learn and practice web journalism,” Stovall said.

Stovall said the workshop will emphasize hands-on training in the software that journalism teachers need to introduce to their students. Special emphasis will be given to learning how to operate JeffersonNet, the WordPress-based content management system that will support the ISONN websites.

“We have designed this content management system to be turn-key — simple, easy-to-learn, and easy-to-operate,” Stovall said.

Other software covered in the workshop will be the basics of HTML, Audacity for audio editing, iMovie for video editing, and various programs for photo editing and creating slideshows.

The deadline for registration for the workshop is Oct. 20.
